Passengers of Nagercoil Express had a lucky escape on Saturday afternoon when the train's engine was damaged by equipment left behind on the track by labourers. Central Railway (CR) spokesperson A K Singh ruled out sabotage and said an inquiry had been ordered into the incident. Around 12.40 pm, as the Nagercoil Express neared Kurla, the wheels of the engine got caught in tools and equipment. According to Singh, labourers working on the tracks seemed to have been taken by surprise by the approaching train and fled leaving their equipment, including iron rods, behind. "The locomotive engine was damaged and the train ground to a halt,'' he added. The engine was detached from the coaches and the train finally left Kurla two hours later, pulled by a new engine. "There was no casualty,'' Singh said, adding that other train services were not affected. "The incident occurred on the down fast lane and so we diverted other trains to the slow lane.''
