A constable of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) died while his fellow cop suffered severe injuries in an exchange of fire with suspected criminals in Bareilly district during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. Police have launched a massive hunt for the assailants who managed to escape. Reports said RPF head constable (HC) Chhote Lal and constable Vindyachal Yadav were deputed on signal cabin security outside the trolley hut situated near the railway pillar on Ram Ganga railway bridge when they spotted three suspicious-looking men on the tracks in the vicinity. When the cops tried to stop them, the trio reportedly opened fire at the cops. One of the bullets struck Chhotelal on his chest, knocking him off his feet. He fell off the railway bridge to hit the ground around 50 feet below and died on the spot. After losing his companion, constable Vindyachal took guard and opened fire at the assailants who were trying to escape. While chasing the fleeing miscreants, Yadav slipped from the tracks off the railway bridge and fell on the ground below with multiple fracture injuries. Senior officials rushed to the site immediately after the reports regarding the shootout reached them. A manhunt was launched for the assailants but no arressts were reported till late on Sunday night
